The Allagash River in Maine is one of the premier brook trout fisheries in the country, but that is not why you should come here. The waterway is a great place to canoe in a secluded environment in the great north country wilderness. You will see animals such as moose, deer, black bear, and countless smaller animals. And, if you know what you are doing, you will catch some of the river's brook trout. June through September, they will be concentrated in the deepest part of the main current, or where cold tributaries enter the main stem. Trout fishing is best from April to mid-June, and again in October, but trout can be caught all summer. If you can't find the trout, you will catch river chubs, as well as see some of the best scenery this continent has to offer.

Camping in Allagash

If you plan to fish the Allagash region, one great way to keep the trip affordable, and have a great time also, is to camp on your trip. There are many excellent camping options in the region for camping and fishing excursions.

It is very important to keep mindful of the fact that this is a true wilderness, and not for the novice outdoorsperson to tackle on their own. The Maine Bureau of Park suggests the book "The Allagash Guide: What You Need to Know to Canoe this Famous Maine Waterway."
