Outdoors MissouriCamping skills involve caring for equipment and maintaining it well. A
sharp ax and hatchet are important and in some ways, just like a knife,
are safer than if they were dull. Less force is needed to
accomplish the task with a sharp instrument. On the other hand, a
sharp ax or hatchet, just like a knife can cause severe injury or worse
if mishandled or not sheathed when not in use.
Needless to say (I would hope!), exercise extreme caution when using this information. Eye
protection and heavy gloves are a must. I use a "bastard file"
for the sharpening process and rarely follow up with the sharpening
stone.
Camping is a very enjoyable activity, and it is also one that allows one to develop a stronger skill set over time. Learning skills like this axe sharpening, or first aid, trail navigation, or survival skills is fun for individuals and for families to do together.
