Driftless Area FishingWisconsin, Iowa, and MinnesotaBack to Top TenThis area of the upper midwest is quite possibly the spring creek trout fishing capital of the world. Bear Creek, French Creek, Bloody Run, and Waterloo Creek are excellent Iowa spring creeks. These creeks mainly hold brown trout. French Creek and Waterloo Creek are probably the best. French Creek holds around 2000 trout per mile, and Waterloo Creek holds around 3000 per mile. Both of these creeks also hold brook trout in their upper reaches. The best spring creeks in Minnesota are Trout Run, and the Whitewater River, both of which are great year-round brown trout streams. The best bet in Wisconsin is the Kickapoo River, another brown trout stream. All three states have countless other trout fishing opportunities not listed here. This area is called the Driftless area because the glaciers never made it here during the last ice age, causing rocky, broken terrain, and high quality springs, which allow the great trout fishing that exists today. ![]() |
