There is just something different about catching fish from flies that you have tied yourself. Whether you are tying flies to save money (not always a good reason to get started), or for some other reason, tying flies is a hobby some folks participate in who don't even enjoy the fishing aspect as much. This series will help you through the process of getting started to the more advanced stages. The first stage of the process is learning what materials and tools will be needed. For this, we have chosen a video that does a great job of outlining these needs, with the caveat that it is British and the prices mentioned are in British pounds. It should be easy enough to visit one of the excellent sites linked here to get U.S. prices on these materials.

In this next section, Mr. Cammiss outlines the basics of tying a fly. Many of the skills required are universal, and even if these flies are not of interest to you, the video is well worth your while.

The Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear is a stand by that is used in many applications. Useful for panfish and most species of trout, ande tied in the correct size, it is a fly you WILL use. Here's how to tie it.

A fly that will catch about any kind of fish from trout to catfish, is the woolly bugger. Tied in a variety of sizes and colors, this is an easy fly to tie that you cannot have too many of. This video is the best we have found for the woolly bugger.

The pheasant tail nymph imitates a wide variety of mayfly nymphs found in many trout streams. Here is a 9 minute video that'll get you going on tying this great fly.
