What is it about trout?

I have wondered many a day why trout fishing is so much more appealing to me than any other sort. What is it that makes many people (including myself) decide to spend the weekend driving two hours to a crowded stream, just to catch one twelve inch trout, when you could have headed down to the bass lake, a five minute drive and probably caught several bass larger than the measly trout you caught. Is it the fact that the put it all on the line during the fight? Maybe, but it seems to me that smallmouth fight significantly harder than trout, yet I still prefer trout. Some people say that their special ingredient is their beauty. Yes, trout are usually very beautiful, but I am nearly as excited to catch a drably colored stocked rainbow as a native cutthroat. Some people believe a trout’s charm lies in the pristine waters in which they reside. While I certainly prefer to fish a secluded mountain stream, crowded, channelized trout streams such as Maramec Spring Branch still get me excited. I think, in the end, it is what a trout represents that gives it a special place in so many people’s heart. It brings to mind ideas of the world of old, a world full of clear, pristine streams, rushing over rocks, sticks, and beaver dams with the unconquered roar of a lion. It represents the days when waters were unpolluted, coursed freely, and provided a beautiful natural environment that provides sustenance to any form of species.
